Marrakech transformation as COP22 approaches
The 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP22) to the UNFCCC is scheduled to take place in Bab Ighli, Marrakech from 07th to 18th November 2016.
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was created in 1994 and aims at reducing greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Conference of Parties (COP) is the governing body of the Convention.
Countries (195 up to date) meet every year for two weeks to discuss their responsibilities which differ from country to country because of their different position on their projected goals, priorities, and the current situation in national and regional realm and circumstances.
Countries’ representatives meet to:
• Gather and share information on gas emissions
• Implement national policies
• Adapt to changing impacts of climate change
• Provide financial and technological support to developing countries
• Cooperate on being prepared to climate change.
The COP22 meeting in Marrakech will comprise a lot of in-sessions and workshops which will facilitate dialogue between countries. Multilateral assessment process will be under way which will end with a high-level event on global climate action.
Moroccan authorities have been busy getting ready for approximately 195 countries’ representatives erecting a whole new COP22 tent village located at Bab Ighli, Marrakech which will become a stage for the summit.
Marrakech has been revamped. Main streets have been repainted, renewed, fitted with solar power lamps. New illuminated decorations have been put in prominent places at the road entries to Marrakech. A new sculpture with solar panels has been placed in front of Marrakech Train Station. You can see that every effort was made to enhance the looks of this already magnificent city.
The biggest improvement must be the new terminal 2 of Marrakech Airport. It is big and tastefully decorated in a beautiful arabesque style from the outside. The shiny, golden diamond shaped panels reflect gracefully in the sun rays. The dominant feature must be the globe, a round shaped construction in the middle which will become home to a new shopping mall. Undoubtedly it shall be the lasting legacy long after COP22 is over.
Such a high-level Conference brings benefits to local businesses. Hotels are said to be full up to its maximum capacity. Car rental business is also said to be on the up. The city embraces itself for an influx of visitors. Marrakech has always been a very popular tourist destination. It has been named one of the world’s top destinations by TripAdvisor users. As reported by Daily Mail, in 2015 Marrakech came out on top Travellers’ Choice Awards, first time ever. Travellers are charmed with its desert landscape, friendliness of the local population, exquisite cuisine and busting souks. Jamaa el Fna is a square and market place at the heart of Marrakech pulsating day and night for the enjoyment of local and foreign visitors. Unsurprisingly it has been recognised in 2001 as a “Masterpiece of World Heritage” by UNESCO.
No wonder COP22 is coming to Marrakech…
